Cigna

About Cigna Insurance

Cigna is a healthcare and insurance company based and incorporated in Bloomfield, Connecticut. Its insurance subsidiaries provide health, dental, life and disability insurance products and services. Cigna is required by law to offer coverage for addiction treatment and mental health treatment, like all private U.S. medical insurance companies. Most of Cigna’s insurance products are offered as employee benefits through employers. However, Cigna also sells private health insurance plans to individuals as well as offering Medicare Advantage Plans in 26 states and managing some Medicaid services in certain states.

The Cigna insurance company was formed in a merger of the Connecticut General Life Insurance Company (CG) and the Insurance Company of North America (INA) in 1982. CG and INA were two of the oldest insurance companies in the United States, with INA founded in 1792 and CG formed in 1865 by the governor of Connecticut. The name “Cigna” was created by combining letters from both the merging companies’ names, CG and INA.

Cigna has several subsidiaries including Express Scripts, a pharmacy company and Cigna Global Health Benefits, which offers insurance products, including life and health insurance in several nations outside of the United States. Cigna insurance is widely accepted in the United States, including here at ARIA. 99% of U.S. pharmacies work with Cigna insurance. Cigna has a free 24-hour veterans assistance hotline and offers 24-hour service for its medical and dental plan subscribers.

Understanding Health Insurance Coverage for Addiction Treatment

Your financial responsibility for addiction treatment depends on several factors. Every Cigna Health Insurance plan has its own specific:

Premium – This is what is deducted from your paycheck or what you pay monthly for your health insurance.

Co-Pay – A set fee for services that you are charged each time they receive a service, for example a $50 co-pay for each visit to your doctor’s office. Or a $50 co-pay to see a specialist.

Deductible – The total amount someone will pay towards services in a given year. Once the the deductible is reached, then your Cigna insurance will pay at 100% of its allowable rate for any accepted claims.

The services that qualify for health insurance benefits will also vary from plan to plan, but federal law in the U.S. requires that all private health insurance providers offer some coverage for both addiction treatment and mental health treatment. So regardless of the Cigna Health Insurance plan you have, there will be some form of coverage for addiction treatment. If you want to know exactly what is covered and what your responsibility would be for treatment at ARIA specifically, feel free to give us a call and ask for an insurance benefits verification. Your admissions coordinator will explain to you in plain language what your Cigna Healthcare plan could cover at ARIA>

Typically speaking, health plans with higher monthly premiums will have lower copays and deductibles, but this can vary. And plans that provide coverage for the whole family will generally be more expensive or have higher co-pays and deductibles.

Types of Addiction Treatment Cigna Insurance Covers

There are 2 major types of addiction treatment: inpatient and outpatient programs. While both treatment types are effective, it’s important to know the differences between these treatment programs.

Inpatient rehab is designed around patients living at the rehab center while attending treatment. On the other hand, outpatient programs vary. The highest level of outpatient treatment is called a partial hospitalization program or PHP. In PHP treatment, patients attend a full day of treatment (at least 6 hours) similar to inpatient addiction treatment, except at the end of their treatment day they leave the medical facility and sleep overnight in a supportive living environment or “sober house”. In some cases if the patient is local, they may return home in the evenings.

Inpatient Treatment with Cigna Health Insurance

Inpatient programs (also called residential treatment) are highly recommended for those with an intense substance use disorder. Cigna insurance can cover a variety of inpatient services for drug and alcohol abuse, although exact coverage depends on the plan.

Treatment services that may be covered by health insurance include:

  • Supervised detox
  • Medication-assisted treatment
  • Rehab center stays
  • Co-occurring mental health disorder treatment
  • Individual and group therapy
  • Transitional care to an outpatient program
  • Outpatient Treatment

Outpatient programs tend to be less expensive than inpatient treatment, but this doesn’t mean your out-of-pocket cost will be lower. The most reliable way to determine your costs here is to call ARIA for an insurance benefits verification or if you like, you can submit your insurance through our secure, confidential form here.
